About This Dish
Literally "Husband and Wife Snack", these small round pancake bites are sold in pairs from street carts. One unit (the "husband") gets a quail egg inside; the other (the "wife") gets a savory batter filling. They're eaten together — the name reflects that they complete each other.
One of Myanmar's most beloved and photogenic street snacks. Vendors sell them from specially shaped griddle pans, working quickly to produce dozens of pairs. Best eaten piping hot directly from the cart. Ask for "မောင်" (maung, male) or the pair.
How to Eat This Properly
Eat in one or two bites while hot. Pop the egg version whole to get the quail yolk burst. The two types balance each other — egg and non-egg, richer and lighter. Eat from the paper bag or a small plate at the cart.
