One of Myanmar's most underrated destinations, Hpa-An sits among dramatic karst limestone mountains along the Thanlwin River. The area is packed with awe-inspiring caves filled with Buddha statues, rice paddies in the shadow of sheer cliffs, and the most photogenic countryside in the country.

November to March (cool and dry). April is very hot. October and November can still see some rain but the countryside is lush and beautiful.

How to Get There

Take a bus from Yangon (~5–6 hours) or from Mawlamyine (~2 hours). A scenic ferry from Mawlamyine along the Thanlwin River is also available.

Visitor Tip

Renting a bicycle or motorbike is the best way to explore — the sights are spread across a wide area. Pack a torch (flashlight) for caves. A Kayin State entry permit is sometimes required — check locally.
